In the 1980s, Dr. Hitt had developed an interest in addiction treatment. He wondered if the cells that were damaged by drugs could be healed by the same techniques he had used to nourish tissue culture cells. This led to research that began in the United States and culminated in Mexico City under the direct sponsorship of the World Health Organization. Dr. Hitt used his very specialized background in tissue culture to develop intravenous formulas that would bathe the damaged brain cells of the addict in an unusually high concentration of amino acids specifically designed to penetrate the brain and repair damaged receptors. Because the body cannot provide such a high concentration of amino acids on its own (not being designed for exposure to addictive substances), giving them intravenously is the only way to achieve the levels necessary for repair.
The formulations were originally studied with alcoholics, and they worked remarkably well. In later years, the NTR System™ formulas were expanded to treat all other addictive substances.
Dr. Hitt’s work has been steadily gaining a reputation in addiction treatment as the most effective program in the world. Several clinics in the United States now offer the NTR System™. In April of 2008, Dr. Hitt received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the California Association of Alcohol and Drug Educators (CAADE) for his achievements in the realm of addiction treatment.
